More Footballs |
This page has 5 footballs in addition to three others on another
page, only sharing one in common.
We start with the simplest, smallest one: the Dodecahedron, made out of twelve pentagons.
Then we insert 4 hexagons in a tetrahedral style to form a kind of truncated Tetrahedron consisting of 4 hexagons and 12 pentagons.
Next, we start with the dodecahedron and stretch the pentagons outwards with a twist so that we can slot in 20 hexagons, and create the traditional football.
Next, we start with the dodecahedron and stretch the pentagons outwards without a twist so that we can slot in 30 hexagons, to make a big football. I don't know why real footballs are never made with this pattern. Any ideas ?
Finally, we take a dodecahedron and surround each pentagon with 5 hexagons, thereby inserting a grand total of 60 hexagons, to create a very big football, which refuses to go spherical with segments of the same length.
And here is an alternative view of these various footballs, where you can better see the relative sizes, and clearly see how the pentagons poke out on the very big football.
