"Two Stick" Tensegrity |
Not
really. It is 4 sticks joined as pairs, but you could achieve the same shape using
two "bows" ( as in bows and arrows ), but that would be cheating. This
object consists of a tetrahedron made of nearly invisible nylon. It is kept in
shape by, and presses in on, the two L shaped sticks. A link of invisible nylon
pulls the corners of the L shapes together, giving the whole thing a magical
stability. I like to think of this object as the archetype of a human
relationship: the two parties held together by invisible ties, and yet also held
apart by invisible tensions, with all forces balancing and creating harmony. I don't
know what the cats think.
Let us continue the
theme of "The Meaning of Life". Note that the two stick tensegrity is
a rigid tetrahedron, and so if you build many of these together into one object,
you can make, for instance, a tetrahelix. But the
interesting point here is that you can arrange them so that in so doing, a
stable and rigid double helix is created! The object on the left here is my feeble attempt
to make a double helix fitting into a tetrahelix structure. Unfortunately the almost
invisible nylon, being almost invisible, makes construction a slight matter of
guesswork. It
dangled well, and believe it or not, the sticks do form a double helix, held
together and held apart all at once.
